Abner Haynes, the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer, has passed away.

This week brought sorrow with the confirmation on Thursday of the passing of Abner Haynes, aged 86, a Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer. Known for his prowess as a running back, Haynes is widely credited with helping to popularize the American Football League during its early years. Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt expressed deep sadness over Haynes’ death in a statement, highlighting his continued presence and contributions to the Kansas City community.

“Abner was one of the original stars of the Dallas Texans and the American Football League. In the league’s inaugural season in 1960, Abner received Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors, and more significantly, he earned the respect and admiration of his teammates and fans alike. Beyond his on-field achievements, Abner demonstrated courage and leadership from a young age,” Hunt wrote.

Who was Abner Haynes?
Although drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1960, Haynes made the decision to join the then-Dallas Texans for the AFL’s inaugural season instead. This decision proved wise, as he became the first recipient of both the AFL’s Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards. By 1962, just two years later, he had secured an AFL championship.
