OU softball dominated Baylor in the first game of the series, buoyed by Tiare Jennings’ outstanding performance.

OU softball coach Patty Gasso was reluctant to delve into discussing Tiare Jennings’ achievements just yet after Jennings made history in Friday’s 8-1 victory over Baylor at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium. Jennings broke Sydney Romero’s program record for career doubles and ignited a seven-run fifth inning with a crucial two-run homer. Gasso praised Jennings as one of the most clutch athletes she has coached, highlighting Jennings’ ability to deliver when the team needs it most.

In the third inning, with OU leading 1-0, Jennings surpassed Romero’s doubles record with a shot into the left-field corner, though the Sooners couldn’t capitalize on the moment as Baylor tied the game in the fourth inning.

The momentum shifted in the fifth inning when Jayda Coleman drew a leadoff walk, setting the stage for Jennings’ go-ahead home run over right-center field, which energized the crowd. Jennings’ home run, her 11th of the season, sparked a potent offensive surge as OU scored seven runs in the inning, culminating in a grand slam by Alynah Torres.

Jennings finished the game 3 for 3 with a walk, contributing significantly to OU’s victory. The game drew an impressive crowd of 8,798, marking the second-largest regular-season attendance in NCAA history for women’s softball.

Rylie Boone also made impactful contributions with three hits, including an infield single that led to an error and contributed to OU’s early scoring. Gasso praised Boone’s ability to consistently create opportunities and described her as a challenging player to defend against due to her versatile offensive skills.

The series against Baylor continues with games scheduled at Love’s Field on Saturday and Sunday.
