How Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold sharpened his mental game during the offseason
Jackson Arnold has moved past the Alamo Bowl and focused on improving throughout spring practice, preparing for his first full season as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback. Despite a promising display of arm talent against Arizona last December, turnovers marred his initial start. Arnold’s primary objective has been minimizing mistakes while evolving into the quarterback Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Seth Littrell envision for the 2024 season.
“After that Arizona game, I needed to mature both personally and as a player,” Arnold remarked at SEC Media Days. “Stepping into the QB1 role requires real leadership, and I’ve grown significantly from where I was during that bowl game.”
Initially, Arnold felt awkward assuming leadership with former quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s departure. However, he has since embraced his role, focusing on vocal leadership throughout offseason workouts and practices.
“Being a vocal leader was my main focus this offseason,” Arnold emphasized. “Whether it’s during conditioning or workouts, I’ve taken on the responsibility of motivating and guiding my teammates, setting the tone for how we operate.”
Developing into a leadership role is a gradual process, as reflected in Arnold’s journey. His efforts have not gone unnoticed by teammates like Danny Stutsman, who sees Arnold navigating similar challenges he once faced.
“It’s been tough for him,” Stutsman acknowledged. “Having only played one game last year and suddenly shouldering all these expectations, Jackson has done an impressive job stepping up and leading.”
Arnold’s offseason also involved honing his skills at the Manning Passing Academy, where he focused on refining his mental acuity and understanding defensive strategies.
“After spring ball, I really delved into the mental aspects of football,” Arnold shared. “Understanding defenses and gaining insights from Coach V on offensive strategies have been crucial in preparing for the upcoming season.”
As Oklahoma gears up for the 2024 campaign, Arnold’s development will be pivotal, particularly as they transition into SEC competition.
“Jackson’s growth and readiness to lead are evident as we head into training camp,” Stutsman observed.
