Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne is brimming with confidence as he enters his second season.
Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze expressed tremendous enthusiasm about his young group of wide receivers during SEC Media Days in Dallas last week. This highlighted his optimism for their potential.
Likewise, Tigers starting quarterback Payton Thorne shared equal excitement about Auburn’s upcoming receivers set to debut in 2024. Among them is Cam Coleman, a highly regarded freshman known for his imposing 6-foot-3 frame, which promises to bolster quarterback confidence.
“Cam’s been impressive. He’s going to be a playmaker for us this season, and Auburn fans will love him,” Thorne emphasized at SEC Media Days. “He really opens up the field, both horizontally and vertically. Defenses will have to respect that, and I’m eager to be on the field with him.”
Coleman’s ability to stretch the field is seen as a significant asset for Auburn’s offense, especially under the collaborative guidance of offensive coordinator Derrick Nix and quarterback coach Kent Austin.
Transitioning into his second year leading Auburn’s offense, Thorne is clearly enjoying the progression. “It’s a big change from year one to year two,” he observed. “Arriving last year in the middle of summer wasn’t ideal for learning a new offense, new team, and atmosphere. Now, we have a solid plan. I’m familiar with everything, which boosts confidence. I believe our hard work this offseason will pay off. We’ve added some new weapons.”
Despite criticisms of Auburn’s passing game last season, Thorne has the full backing of Coach Freeze, who is notably confident in Thorne’s capabilities moving forward.
Thorne acknowledges the scrutiny but remains composed and focused on proving himself consistently. “Accuracy is key for quarterbacks,” he asserted. “It’s not about throwing the farthest or running the fastest; it’s about timing and precision.”
Overall, Thorne feels a surge in confidence, attributing it to thorough preparation and effective coaching. “There’s definitely more confidence now,” he remarked. “I trust our guys to make plays, and that’s a testament to our coaching staff as well.”
