Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell is reaching new heights after overcoming developmental challenges.

In his characteristic soft-spoken Iowa accent, with sweat glistening on his forehead after a long day overseeing the defense he was drafted to lead, there stood Jack Campbell — embodying the role both in appearance and demeanor.

For those familiar with Campbell, his humility is palpable. He deflects praise onto his coaches and teammates without hesitation.

In turn, his coaches reciprocate the admiration. “Let me tell you,” remarked Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn months ago about Campbell’s progress. “First off, he’s a man. He’s really taken charge of this offseason the way a true Mike linebacker should. He’s embraced the green-dot mentality and is leading the defense impressively.”

“He’s surpassed my expectations, which were already high,” added Lions linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard. “He’s returned more prepared than I anticipated. Despite minimal time off, he immersed himself in the game, which is paying dividends.”

These accolades came in May, just a few months after Campbell’s rookie season concluded. He was part of the Lions’ impressive 2023 draft class, which included standout performances from TE Aaron Glenn, RB Jahmyr Gibbs, and DB Brian Branch, all of whom made significant impacts in their debut seasons.
