Why Oregon Football Lost Four-Star Recruit Josiah Sharma to the Texas Longhorns
The Oregon Ducks’ 2025 recruiting class experienced a setback when four-star defensive lineman Josiah Sharma committed to the Texas Longhorns on Thursday night.
Sharma announced on Twitter/X, “After extensive discussions with the University of Texas, I feel like I’m at home.”
The 6-foot-5, 325-pound defensive tackle was initially expected to choose Texas but surprised many with his commitment to Oregon and coach Dan Lanning. However, Sharma’s change of heart led him to feel more aligned with Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian. Texas’ 2025 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 13 nationally.
Sharma is ranked as the No. 5 prospect in California, the No. 7 defensive lineman in the nation, and the No. 83 overall prospect in the 2025 class by On3.
Playing both offensive and defensive line for Folsom High School in California, Sharma has been part of a team that has won 5 of the last 6 CIF Class 1A state football championships.
Losing Sharma is an unusual setback for Lanning and Oregon’s recruiting efforts.
On a positive note, several five-star prospects from the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes will visit Eugene this weekend for the Ducks’ annual Saturday Night Live Camp at Autzen Stadium.
The next commitment to watch is top-ranked safety recruit Trey McNutt. After postponing his decision, the five-star prospect visited Texas A&M this week and will also visit Oregon.
While the Ducks are still in the lead for McNutt, his visit to Texas A&M could potentially alter his decision.
If McNutt commits, he would join wide receiver Dakorien Moore, Oregon’s highest-rated recruit ever, making them the two five-stars in Oregon’s 2025 class.
With commitments from Moore and four-star cornerback Dorian Brew, the Ducks are currently ranked behind only Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia in the national class rankings.
