Brent Venables Commends QB Jackson Arnold’s ‘Decision Making’ During Oklahoma’s Initial Fall Practices.
The Sooners are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the 2024 season opener against Temple on August 30. Quarterback Jackson Arnold will be the focal point this fall as he steps into his role as OU’s starting QB.
Head coach Brent Venables has already noted signs of improvement in Arnold after the first three training camp practices. “I think we’re executing at a really high level right now,” Venables commented on Saturday. “His decision-making is even better than it was.”
During SEC Media Days last month, Arnold mentioned he has been working hard to enhance his mental game, particularly in reading defenses. In his first start for OU during the Alamo Bowl against Arizona, Arnold threw three interceptions, which complicated the perception of his performance, despite also passing for 361 yards and two touchdowns.
Venables’ complex defense presented Arnold with various coverage schemes during the spring to challenge him, especially with a demanding SEC schedule ahead. The additional summer practice has been beneficial, but Venables also noted that the offensive line’s improved stability has aided the young quarterback. “The guys around him are playing better,” Venables said. “The offensive line is in a much better position than it was in the spring. We had some injuries and absences then.”
Branson Hickman, a center transferred from SMU, expressed admiration for Arnold and revealed that the quarterback’s talent influenced his decision to join Oklahoma. “It’s been good,” Hickman said on Thursday. “Growing up in the Dallas area, I was aware of Jackson’s reputation coming out of high school. I knew he was a great player and a great person. I even spent time with him on my official visit. … You want to play with a good quarterback to have a chance to win. So, it’s been great.”
The offense now fully belongs to Arnold. Since taking over for Dillon Gabriel in the Alamo Bowl, he has gained more experience leading the offense, which Venables and co-offensive coordinators Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley hope will carry into the upcoming season. “Overall, his leadership is becoming more natural,” Venables said. “He’s led these guys all summer and spring.”
