The freshman receiver continues to receive strong feedback during preseason camp, even though he’s supposed to be a senior in high school for the fall of 2024.
“He’s very explosive and he tracks the ball really well,” Alabama football offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan said Saturday. “I think those are the two things that kind of stand out.”
Williams is still quite early in his Alabama career. Three practices in, to be exact. And only one has been in shoulder pads. He joined the Crimson Tide ahead of the summer. But he hasn’t taken long to make an impression on the coaching staff.
JaMarcus Shephard, Alabama’s assistant head coach/co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach, said Williams takes coaching “great.”
“You can coach that kid any kind of way you want to, and he responds to it at a high level,” Shephard said
Sheridan credited the coaches around Williams for how they have poured into him as well as Williams for working hard.
Yes, Williams is only a freshman, but he’s already passed one of the early tests.
“I think the hardest thing for a freshman wide receiver is just getting lined up properly,” Sheridan said. “That’s never been an issue for him. He’s been on it as far as recognition of communication, whether it be signals or in the huddle, or whatever it may be, lining up properly. All the varieties of formations and motions and shifts that we do.”
Williams is battling for playing time at receiver where Alabama lost three starters from a season ago. He might not immediately start or even see significant playing time immediately because of his age and inexperience, but it’s clear his future is bright
