Steelers Suffer Injuries to Two Key Players.

As the Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their training camp at St. Vincent College, the team is once again dealing with a wave of injuries. While it’s encouraging that several key players are returning or ramping up their activity, the latest injuries leave unanswered questions about the final 53-man roster. Two injuries, in particular, could have significant implications for the team.

The first concerns center Nate Herbig, who exited practice with an upper-body injury, reportedly affecting his left arm. Although details regarding the severity of the injury have not been provided, this situation is concerning. Herbig is expected to start as the center for the 2024 season, but he struggled during his initial performance last week, fumbling two snaps with Justin Fields at quarterback. If his injury keeps him sidelined for an extended period, it could create an opportunity for second-round pick Zach Frazier to take over the starting role.

The second injury involves defensive back Grayland Arnold, who was on track to secure a spot on the 53-man roster as a nickel cornerback, kick returner, and special teams player. However, he also left practice due to an injury, reportedly affecting his knee or leg, and he had to be carted off the field. Similar to Herbig, there have been no immediate updates about Arnold’s condition, but the team is expected to share more information soon.

On a positive note, rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson is making progress in his recovery. DeMarvin Leal and Donte Jackson, who missed practice, were seen doing individual drills on the sidelines.

The best news came with the return of two defensive starters to practice. Defensive tackle Keeanu Benton participated after leaving the first preseason game with an eye injury, and outside linebacker Alex Highsmith returned in a limited capacity as he recovers from a groin injury.

The Steelers face challenges in finalizing their roster as they await updates on the severity of these injuries. Arnold’s place on the opening-week roster is uncertain, raising concerns about his future with the team. Both he and Herbig are eager to return to practice and get back on the field with the Steelers as soon as possible.
