Detroit Tigers Promote Their Newly Acquired Top Prospect from Trade Deadline
The Detroit Tigers haven’t hesitated to see what one of their newest top prospects can do at the Major League level. With their playoff hopes virtually dashed, the Tigers have made it clear they’ll be giving their young players and top prospects some Major League experience as the season winds down.
So far, this strategy has brought a spark to the team.
With Parker Meadows and Kerry Carpenter back from their extended injury absences, both have been on fire at the plate, contributing to a four-game winning streak, including a sweep of the Seattle Mariners.
As the organization continues to evaluate its young talent, they’ve decided to call up one of their newest top prospects after he impressed during his 11-game stint with the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate.
According to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, Detroit is promoting Trey Sweeney to the Major Leagues.
Sweeney, a former first-round pick, was part of the trade that sent star pitcher Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers. While fellow prospect Thayron Liranzo initially drew more attention, Sweeney will be the first to make his MLB debut.
The Tigers have yet to officially announce the promotion, so it’s unclear what roster move will be made to accommodate Sweeney.
In his minor league career, Sweeney has a slash line of .254/.356/.435, with 51 home runs, 135 extra-base hits, and 190 RBIs across 350 games.
If the shortstop can contribute both offensively and defensively at the big league level, he could become a key piece for the Tigers’ future.
