How Experienced BYU Football Defenders Chose to Return.

A few months have passed since the BYU football team wrapped up the 2023 season and the players started making decisions about their futures.

Some chose to transfer, while others focused on preparing for professional football careers.

However, defensive lineman Tyler Batty opted to return to Provo for another year after careful consideration.

“It was a difficult decision to come back,” Batty shared after a recent practice. “There were many offers on the table, but I felt there was more left to accomplish. Now that I’m back and participating in spring practice, I’m excited and eager for the season to start.”

Batty’s determination to improve after last fall’s disappointment is understandable, as the entire BYU team acknowledges they fell short of their goals, including missing out on a bowl game.

“We’re still in the offseason, and it’s something the returning players think about daily,” Batty said. “The way last season ended wasn’t what we hoped for, so we’re motivated to change that.”

Batty also believes the BYU defense can make significant strides in its second year under defensive coordinator Jay Hill, which was another key reason for his decision to return.

“Jay is a coach who truly cares about his players,” Batty said. “He motivates you to perform at your best, and you feel a strong sense of trust and relationship with him. That was a major factor in why I came back.”

To make the defensive improvements he envisions, Batty knew it was crucial to have experienced players return. He reached out to senior linebacker Ben Bywater, encouraging him to come back for another season.

“Ben was the first person I called once I decided to return,” Batty said. “I told him, ‘I’m coming back. Join me and let’s make it happen.’ Having Ben, who is a fantastic player and leader with extensive experience, was essential. I’m thrilled to play with him again.”

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake noted that the return of veterans like Bywater and Batty has already made a positive impact, even during spring practices.

“The leadership is evident,” Sitake said. “While we have many new faces, it’s great to have seasoned players like Batty on the defensive line, along with veterans like Blake Mangleson and John Nelson running the defensive room. Ben Bywater with the linebackers and Jakob Robinson with the defensive backs also bring invaluable experience. Their presence and leadership make it easier to communicate and reinforce our message.”

Reflecting on his BYU journey, Batty feels he has grown significantly since his freshman year.

“I owe a lot to past players, leaders, and coaches—both the previous and current defensive staff,” Batty said. “Their support has been crucial in my development. It’s been a journey, and I’m excited for one more season ahead.”
