“You’re dead to me”: Trent Richardson reflects on his experience with the Indianapolis Colts.
Trent Richardson’s stint with the Indianapolis Colts is well-known for its struggles.
The running back was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Colts on September 18, 2013. He played for Indianapolis through the remainder of that season and in 2014, accumulating 977 rushing yards, 55 receptions, and scoring 7 touchdowns.
Originally the 3rd overall pick by the Browns in 2012, Richardson found himself out of the league after 2014.
He faced numerous off-field challenges, as friends and acquaintances drained his finances.
On “The Pivot” podcast with ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark, Richardson shared how quickly things soured with the Colts.
“Have you ever been in the complex and had the GM tell you, ‘You’re dead to me?'” he recalled, referring to a conversation with former Colts GM Ryan Grigson. “How can I play for someone like that? It made me question why they even wanted me.”
Richardson explained that the trade took the joy out of playing football for him, as he learned about it while at the Browns’ facility preparing for the next game.
“That Wednesday, I got a call from my friend,” Richardson said. “He told me, ‘You’ve been traded to the Colts.’ I replied, ‘Get off my phone.’ Then I turned on the radio and heard, ‘Trent Richardson has been traded to the Colts.’ What?!”
