West Virginia’s remaining Big 12 title game hopes came to an end Saturday with a 49-35 loss to Baylor (6-4, 4-3 Big 12) in Morgantown. The Mountaineers (5-5, 4-3 Big 12) traded touchdowns with
Baylor in a high-scoring first half. Garrett Greene started for the Mountaineers after missing the last two games with an upper-body injury and wasted no time
making an impact. He opened scoring for WVU with a 3-yard keeper on the game’s first drive and later connected with Traylon Ray on a tipped 9-yard
touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14. Greene added a 2-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime, bringing the Mountaineers within 35-28 heading into the locker room.
West Virginia racked up 338 yards of offense in the first half but couldn’t sustain that production in the second.
The Mountaineer defense stepped up after halftime, forcing three consecutive stops, including a missed field goal and two punts. However, WVU’s offense couldn’t capitalize on these
opportunities. The Mountaineers failed on two key fourth-down attempts, including a 4th-and-1 from the Baylor 9-yard line and a later 4th-and-6 from the
Baylor 35. Baylor pulled away in the fourth quarter, using a 10-play touchdown drive to stretch their lead, and a late interception sealed the win, handing the Bears their first-ever victory in Morgantown.
