Important remarks to note from Lucy Olsen’s talk about her transition to Iowa on the ‘Hawkeye Report Podcast’
New Iowa women’s basketball guard Lucy Olsen made headlines for the Hawkeyes through the transfer portal.
Last season at Villanova, Olsen ranked third nationally in points per game. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 23.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, shooting 43.8% from the field, 29.4% from 3-point range, and 80.7% from the free throw line.
ESPN ranked Olsen as the fourth-best player in the transfer portal.
Olsen and the Iowa women’s basketball team are currently undergoing summer workouts. Settling in Iowa City, Olsen joined the “Hawkeye Report Podcast” to discuss her transition to the Hawkeyes. Hawkeye Report’s Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann spoke with Olsen about her move to the black and gold. Here’s the full interview with key excerpts below.
Lucy Olsen on Learning About the Coaching Change:
“I was shocked when I heard about the coaching change while driving. Initially, it felt surprising, but it made sense after she explained. I had met Jan during the visit and liked her a lot. With most of the team and coaching staff staying, I felt confident in the program’s stability. Though I would’ve loved to be coached by Coach Bluder, I trusted Coach Jan and the team’s potential.”
On the Process of Visiting and Committing to Iowa:
“The process was overwhelming. It leaked that I was transferring before I officially entered the portal, which was crazy. Coach Bluder was my first call, and her enthusiasm stood out. We quickly arranged a Zoom call with the coaching staff and my parents. They flew back in the middle of the night for my visit, which showed their dedication. The welcoming nature of the coaches and team made me feel it was the perfect fit.”
On Following Caitlin Clark:
“I know Caitlin Clark is an amazing player who left a significant legacy. My focus is on being myself and having fun playing basketball. The coaches’ confidence in me helped ease any concerns about following in her footsteps. Caitlin even texted me to say they really wanted me, which was a big boost.”
On Stepping into a Scoring Role Similar to Maddy Siegrist’s at Villanova:
“It’s similar to my experience at Villanova, where I unexpectedly took on a scoring role. Here, I’m still finding my place, but the goal is to win. Last year’s leadership experience at Villanova will help, especially with five freshmen on the team.”
On Getting into the Gym at Iowa:
“I was eager to get into the gym right away. After traveling, I needed to shoot around. My mom wanted to focus on room decor and groceries, but I was all about basketball. Now that I have gym access, I can practice anytime, and I’m loving it.”
On Iowa’s Fan Support:
“Watching Iowa games on TV, I was impressed by the fan support. Experiencing the energy in person is incredible. Even at the airport, fans recognized me and asked for pictures. Everyone in Iowa has been so welcoming and supportive, and I’m excited to meet more fans and play in front of them.”
Olsen’s integration into the Iowa program, her role as a potential leader, and her excitement about the supportive fanbase all bode well for the upcoming season.
