Tennessee Volunteers’ wide receiver Bru McCoy has confirmed his decision to return for the 2024 season.
Tennessee fans worldwide can breathe a collective sigh of relief as McCoy commits to another year on Rocky Top. Over the last two seasons, McCoy has proven to be a formidable asset for the Volunteers. In the most recent season, he amassed 17 receptions, scored one touchdown, and gained 217 yards before a severe injury sidelined him for the rest of the 2023 season. The prior season showcased McCoy’s prowess with 52 receptions, four touchdowns, and 667 receiving yards, all while playing alongside Biletnikoff award winner Jalin Hyatt and former 1000-yard receiver Cedric Tillman.
Tennessee has bolstered its lineup with new threats, including Chris Brazzell, who announced his move to Tennessee on December 21st. An All-American freshman, Brazzell had an impressive season at Tulane with stats of 44 receptions for 711 yards and five touchdowns. Additionally, the Volunteers secured the transfer of top-ranked tight end Holden Staes from Notre Dame, who tallied 15 catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns. The team’s recruitment efforts have also been successful, bringing in five-star Mike Matthews and four-star Braylon Staley. The wide receiver unit is set to undergo changes but is anticipated to maintain dominance.
McCoy will be catching passes from his third Volunteer quarterback as Tennessee looks toward current true freshman and future redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava expressed his desire for McCoy’s return to the media before his bowl game appearance, emphasizing McCoy’s potential leadership role in a relatively young receiver group for the upcoming season. With McCoy’s decision to return, Iamaleava gains a solid, physical target for his inaugural regular season as a starter.
