Tennessee baseball is just two wins away from securing the program’s first national title. On Saturday, they begin a best-of-three series against Texas A&M in the College World Series Finals.
During a press conference, a reporter asked head coach Tony Vitello, along with players Kirby Connell and Kavares Tears, about Tennessee being referred to as a baseball school. Vitello responded by saying Tennessee is an “everything school” and highlighted how Pat Summitt set the tone for a winning culture.
“It’s how she went about her business and the type of character she instilled in her players. It’s pretty awesome,” Vitello said. “That’s what her championship was despite all the banners. The byproduct was a whole hell of a lot of wins, and she was a winner.”
Summitt’s remarkable career included eight national championships, 18 Final Fours, and 16 SEC regular season and tournament titles.
Under Vitello, Vol baseball has won two SEC regular season titles and two SEC Tournament titles. This marks Vitello’s first appearance in a College World Series Finals. Tennessee will begin their quest for the national title on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the Aggies.
