The Los Angeles Rams’ defense surpassed expectations this season, prompting several teams seeking a head coach to consider Raheem Morris.
After setting the record for the most losses by a defending Super Bowl champion last year, the Rams secured a playoff berth this season with a 10-7 record. Much credit for the team’s success goes to the unexpectedly strong performance by their youthful defense.
This season saw standout performances from key players on the Rams’ defense, many of whom were rookies. Kobie Turner, a rookie defensive tackle, equaled Aaron Donald’s rookie franchise record for sacks in a season, while third-year linebacker Ernest Jones set the franchise record for total tackles in a season. These achievements, not entirely anticipated, owe much to defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
“This has been an incredible journey because it began with our process,” Morris remarked. “Last year, towards the end, we witnessed some young talents taking the field with the team we had envisioned coming up here. Some of these individuals emerged as leaders or torchbearers. Seeing their growth in the offseason, earning respect from themselves, teammates, and coaches to step up and play has been truly outstanding.”
Morris inherited a defense that had lost key figures like Leonard Floyd and Jalen Ramsey. However, due to their unexpected defensive success this season, Morris is attracting interest from several teams in need of a head coach, such as the Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Chargers. With various teams on the lookout for new leadership, including the recently vacant spot at the Tennessee Titans following Mike Vrabel’s dismissal, Morris is set to be a highly sought-after candidate in the upcoming weeks.
Undoubtedly, Morris deserves the attention he’s receiving. Any team that secures him will gain a coach with extensive experience. Having previously coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011, Morris is well-versed in navigating the NFL landscape.
Before any potential move to a new team, Morris remains focused on leading the Rams’ defense in the upcoming playoffs. Their first playoff game on Sunday, Jan. 14, pits them against Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions. Coach Sean McVay and Morris aim to defy expectations and overcome one of the NFC’s strongest teams.
