The Sooners’ roster is complete, but what is the status of their top transfer target, NiJaree Canady?
As soon as NiJaree Canady, the standout pitcher in college softball over the last two seasons, entered the transfer portal, Oklahoma emerged as a likely destination. It seemed like a natural fit, with Canady seeking to join a winning program and championship contender like the Sooners, who were in need of pitching reinforcement after securing their record fourth consecutive NCAA championship.
It’s been a month since Canady entered the portal, and while there has been speculation about where the All-American pitcher and this year’s National Collegiate Player of the Year might land, there has been no public indication of her intentions or leanings. However, Canady needs to make a decision soon as fall semester approaches for potential schools of interest like Florida, Florida State, Texas, and Oklahoma.
OU’s appeal to Canady extends beyond pitching opportunities, encompassing one of college softball’s strongest offenses to support her, a rich history, tradition, extensive resources for development, and significant NIL opportunities.
While Oklahoma would certainly welcome Canady’s commitment, recent roster developments complicate matters. Following the 2024 season and subsequent roster adjustments, head coach Patty Gasso filled the final roster spot with Sam Landry, a standout pitcher from Louisiana. This move initially suggests that Oklahoma may no longer be pursuing Canady. However, given Canady’s indecision, her proximity to Topeka, Kansas (making it easier for family and friends to attend games), and Gasso’s reputation for recruiting top talent, it’s premature to discount Oklahoma’s chances.
Securing Canady would position the Sooners as presumptive favorites for the upcoming season, bolstering their already formidable softball dynasty of the past decade.
