Midfielder Lewis Warrington has conveyed his well-wishes to everyone at Plymouth Argyle as his loan spell from Everton concludes prematurely. The 21-year-old sustained an ankle injury during training last month, sidelining him beyond the January transfer window. Both clubs have jointly decided that he won’t be returning to Home Park once he regains fitness.
Despite initial optimism when Warrington joined Argyle from Everton in July, making just three starts and encountering strong competition in central midfield limited his involvement. Jordan Houghton’s impressive form further restricted Warrington’s chances, often leaving him out of the matchday squad.
Responding to Argyle’s announcement on his loan recall, Warrington expressed gratitude, stating, “A good club filled with even better people. Despite not getting the chance to prove myself on the field, I have learned valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my career. Wishing everyone at the club nothing but success. Now time to focus on getting myself right and ending the season strong.”
Argyle’s director of football, Neil Dewsnip, explained the decision, citing Warrington’s injury beyond the transfer window and the mutual agreement to prioritize his recovery and seek further playing opportunities at Everton.
Warrington becomes the fifth player to leave Argyle this month, joining Finn Azaz, Luke Cundle, and Kaine Kesler-Hayden in returning from loan spells. Azaz was transferred to Middlesbrough for £2.5 million, Cundle was recalled by Wolverhampton Wanderers and subsequently loaned to Stoke City, while Kesler-Hayden’s recall was activated by Aston Villa. Additionally, defender Macaulay Gillesphey departed for Charlton Athletic in a deal undisclosed.
