Will Rashee Rice be available for the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1? Here’s an update on his legal situation
Rashee Rice is currently facing eight felony charges related to a car crash in downtown Dallas.
As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, questions loom about whether Rashee Rice will be available, given his ongoing legal issues. Rice, entering his second NFL season, is under investigation for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident in Texas, facing eight felony charges and a related lawsuit.
Additionally, Rice was accused of assaulting a photographer on May 9, although it’s unlikely that charges will be filed for that incident. However, the NFL could still impose a suspension, putting his availability for the season opener in doubt.
With the Chiefs set to kick off their season on September 5, there is uncertainty about whether Rice will play or if other receivers like Hollywood Brown or Xavier Worthy will take on a more significant role with Patrick Mahomes.
According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the NFL has yet to meet with the Chiefs or Rice regarding a potential suspension. This suggests that any disciplinary action may not be resolved in time, making it likely that Rice will be available for the game against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens on Thursday Night Football.
“We have been monitoring developments in the matter,” an NFL spokesperson told ProFootballTalk.com. “Following the conclusion of the legal process, the NFL will review the matter under the Personal Conduct Policy.”
While the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, could place Rice on the Commissioner Exempt list, Florio believes this is unlikely, as the policy is typically reserved for domestic violence cases.
Rice had an impressive 2023 season with 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, contributing to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada.
