Tensions Rise: David Shanahan Clashes with Management, Hints at Possible Exit
last-second field goal gave Georgia Tech a thrilling 24-21 victory over Florida State in the return of NCAA football to Ireland. However, it was his placeholder, punter David Shanahan, who stole the show, earning a standing ovation from his fellow Irishmen.
While playing at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium has become a cherished NCAA tradition, Shanahan made history as the first Irishman to earn a full scholarship to
play college football. Hailing from Castleisland, County Kerry, the senior Yellow Jackets punter became the unexpected star of the game.
Punters rarely find themselves in the spotlight, but Shanahan captured the hearts of the 50,000-strong crowd at Aviva Stadium with every punt. His efforts were ultimately rewarded as Georgia Tech lifted the Aer Lingus Classic trophy.
The game itself was a hard-fought battle. Florida State (FSU) took the early lead on their opening drive but failed to secure the win despite their powerful ground offense and two impressive field goals from Ryan Fitzgerald.
