Philadelphia Phillies slugger Nick Castellanos has parted ways with super agent Scott Boras at the start of this offseason.
Multiple sources noted the change on social media, indicating that Castellanos will represent himself going forward. His wife confirmed this decision.
This marks another athlete who has chosen to drop Boras since last season.
It’s unclear why Castellanos made this switch, especially since he isn’t in the market for a new contract this offseason. He signed a five-year, $100 million deal before the 2022 season and still has two years remaining. It’s possible there was a falling out with Boras, or he simply wants to manage things on his own, but the reasons remain unknown.
This decision comes after a challenging offseason for Boras, who struggled to secure significant long-term contracts for pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell, both of whom ended up signing short-term deals. Both players faced injuries and underperformance due to their late signings. Montgomery also left Boras as his agent.
The 32-year-old Castellanos had a solid season, hitting .254 for the Phillies, who won the National League East. He recorded 23 home runs and 154 hits.
A 12-year veteran with the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, and Phillies, Castellanos boasts a lifetime batting average of .274 and has been named an All-Star twice. He also won a Silver Slugger Award in 2021 and has received MVP votes in two different seasons.
The Phillies were recently eliminated by the New York Mets in the National League Division Series, having reached the World Series and NLCS in the previous two seasons.
