Coach Shane Steichen explained that the decision to change quarterbacks was driven by the Colts’ desire to win immediately.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was injured after learning he had been benched.
His replacement, 39-year-old Joe Flacco, attempted to stay focused and keep things in perspective.
The day after the news broke that Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had been demoted, head coach Shane Steichen explained to reporters why Flacco would remain the starter for the remainder of the season. Steichen cited one primary reason for the decision.
“It’s my responsibility to the 53 players and to this organization to win football games,” Steichen said Wednesday, his first public remarks since making the change. “It’s a tough decision, but one I believe is in the best interest of the team. I think Joe gives us the best chance to win right now. That said, we’re not giving up on Anthony (Richardson) by any means.”
Indianapolis (4-4) selected Richardson to end their ongoing quarterback search, hoping he would be the long-term answer for the franchise.
However, the 22-year-old has faced challenges both on the field and with his health since joining the team.
Richardson’s completion percentage of 44.4% is the lowest in the NFL this season. He has thrown four touchdowns and seven interceptions, with nine total turnovers—tied for the third most in the league—despite missing two games due to a hip injury.
This is not the first time Richardson has been sidelined. Over the course of his brief career, he has missed 15 of 25 games and finished only five of his 10 career starts, primarily due to injuries, including a season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder last October.
Then came Sunday’s game against Houston (6-2). Richardson made a costly mistake by throwing an interception into double coverage in the final minute of the first half. The Texans quickly capitalized on the turnover, turning it into a touchdown and ultimately winning 23-20. With the victory, Houston took a two-game lead in the AFC South, completing a season sweep of the Colts.
