The connection between the Tennessee Vols and former LSU transfer offensive tackle Zalance Heard has been circulating for the past two weeks. Despite prominent recruiting websites favoring the Vols as the likely destination for Heard, there has been a notable lack of communication from Heard himself, the University of Tennessee (UT), and media outlets regarding his potential move to Knoxville.
However, according to University of Tennessee school records, it seems that the Vols have successfully secured the services of the talented transfer. As of Friday evening, a check of the school’s student database reveals that Heard is listed as an active student when searching for his name in the school directory.
As shown in the screenshot from January 19, 2024, Heard does not currently have a campus designation or an assigned email address from the university. Despite this, the indication in the school directory suggests that progress has been made in securing Heard’s transfer to the University of Tennessee.
Zalance Heard, a former LSU tackle, stands out as one of the most highly regarded offensive linemen in the transfer portal. Joining the Tigers a year ago as the #15 overall player and #3 offensive tackle in the country in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Heard played in 12 games with one start during his time at LSU.
The dynamics of the Vols’ offensive line will undoubtedly be impacted by Heard’s addition. Incumbent left tackle John Campbell, Jr., who recently announced his return for another season with Tennessee, has performed admirably in that position when healthy. Heard, seemingly best suited for the left tackle role, raises questions about how the lineup will be configured. With Coach Josh Heupel known for his flexibility in moving offensive linemen, the positioning of Campbell and Heard, particularly on the right side, remains to be seen.
While the configuration of the offensive line presents an intriguing subplot for Volunteer fans, the news of securing Zalance Heard’s transfer is undoubtedly a significant win for Coach Heupel and the Vols. The lack of fanfare surrounding the acquisition may have been silent, but the impact of landing a highly sought-after talent like Heard speaks volumes for the future of the Tennessee football program.
