The appointment of the former Rangers manager was met with widespread disapproval from the outset, and I acknowledge that sentiment. However, for Sunderland fans, this wasn’t an unprecedented situation. In my nearly four decades of supporting this club, it’s a rare occurrence to have a manager or head coach, or whatever label is used nowadays, who genuinely excites the fanbase—more like a once-in-a-decade phenomenon.
Spare us the entire “you need to give him a chance” persuasion. We understand. Trust me, we do. This is a club that has been consistently providing opportunities to managers whom nobody truly desired for a lifetime. Just in the past five or six years, we’ve had the likes of Phil Parkinson, Lee Johnson, and Simon Grayson. We’ve been giving managers a chance.
