Commanders have reportedly made the decision to dismiss Coach Ron Rivera.
The 61-year-old Rivera, who has a 26-36-1 (.421) record over four seasons with Washington, is having his toughest year as head coach with the Commanders at 4–9.
According to Russini’s report, the new owner, Josh Harris, has already decided to dismiss the experienced coach, aiming to rebuild the team around a probable top pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
“It’s widely understood within the organization, based on conversations I’ve had with multiple individuals, that Ron Rivera and some members of the front office will be let go,” Russini stated. “Since taking over the team, new owner Josh Harris had initially planned to retain Rivera until the season’s end before making changes. But now, it’s become an open secret.”
Rivera’s time in Washington is expected to conclude after the 2023 season.
Before his time with the Commanders, Rivera had nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers, where he achieved a 76–63–1 record and a Super Bowl appearance. However, he hasn’t replicated that success with Washington.
Despite winning the NFC East and reaching the playoffs in 2020, the Commanders are on track to miss the postseason for the third straight year. Washington’s last winning record was in 2016 under Jay Gruden, finishing 8–7–1.
