Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is seeking solutions after a tough loss where the defense was seriously exposed.
In the aftermath of the 34-20 defeat by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, LaFleur is hesitant about an immediate decision regarding the status of defensive coordinator Joe Barry. He’s taking time to assess the situation, acknowledging the shortcomings in the recent game where the defense struggled against Baker Mayfield’s impressive performance at Lambeau Field.
Facing questions about the defensive display and Barry’s position, LaFleur sidestepped talks of an immediate coordinator change, preferring to review game footage and find solutions before making any firm decisions.
Historically, LaFleur has made coordinator changes during offseasons rather than in-season, as he did with defensive coordinator Mike Pettine after the 2020 season, and special teams coordinators Shawn Mennenga and Maurice Drayton after the 2020 and 2021 seasons, respectively.
Barry’s hiring in 2021 raised doubts due to his track record with lower-ranked defenses in previous roles. Despite the improved talent with the Packers, defensive issues, particularly in stopping the run, persisted. However, the recent loss showcased weaknesses in pass defense, notably exploited by Mayfield.
Mayfield effectively dismantled Barry’s zone defense strategy, revealing significant gaps in coverage that allowed for historic passing statistics at Lambeau Field.
LaFleur’s remarks suggest concerns about being outcoached and outplayed, indicating potential issues within the defensive coordination.
Despite multiple sacks against Mayfield, vulnerabilities in pass coverage were evident, with receivers like Chris Godwin finding considerable separation.
With a two-game losing streak and decreased playoff chances, currently at 27% according to ESPN Analytics, LaFleur emphasizes the need for a playoff mindset in the remaining three games. However, he refrains from definitively stating whether Barry’s approach has lost its impact on the players. The team recognizes the imperative for substantial improvements to enhance their performance going forward.
