The Eagles are turning to a divisional rival to revamp their offensive strategy.
Philadelphia is set to bring in Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as their new OC, as reported by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero on Saturday night.
Moore’s tenure with the Chargers in 2023 was marked by turmoil, with head coach Brandon Staley fired on Dec. 15 and star player Justin Herbert missing the final four games due to injury. Consequently, the Chargers’ offense struggled, ranking in the bottom 12 in scoring.
Prior to his stint with the Chargers, Moore had worked for the Cowboys, Philadelphia’s primary NFC East adversary. After a brief playing career, Moore joined the Cowboys as a QBs coach in 2018 and swiftly rose to the position of offensive coordinator in 2019. He held this role for four years, overseeing the offense for three seasons under Mike McCarthy from 2020 to 2022.
During his time as OC, the Cowboys topped the NFL in yards twice, achieving the same feat in scoring in 2021.
Despite Moore’s recent transitions, the 34-year-old is widely regarded as one of the league’s most respected offensive minds. Even in the season leading to his departure from the Cowboys, Dallas maintained a top-five scoring unit. The Chargers had restricted him from interviews until the recent hiring of Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday, according to Rapoport and Pelissero.
In just three days, the Eagles moved swiftly to secure Moore’s services. Head coach Nick Sirianni, who also swiftly hired defensive coordinator Vic Fangio after parting ways with Miami, now has a new set of coordinators for the second consecutive offseason.
Moore’s primary task will be rejuvenating the Eagles’ offense, which, despite finishing with the seventh-most points in the league, struggled down the stretch, going 1-6, including a 32-9 wild-card loss to the Buccaneers.
His collaboration with quarterback Jalen Hurts will play a crucial role, as will addressing the potential void left by Jason Kelce, the highly impactful center in recent NFL history, if he decides to officially retire.
