Andrew McCutchen, formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies, has agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2024 season, as reported by Jason Mackey of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. This upcoming season marks McCutchen’s 16th in Major League Baseball.
During his time with the Phillies from 2019 to 2021, McCutchen signed a three-year, $50 million free-agent deal and recorded a batting average of .237, an on-base percentage of .343, a slugging percentage of .444, along with 47 home runs, 143 RBIs, and a .787 OPS.
While McCutchen has played for various teams like the Phillies, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and Milwaukee Brewers, the majority of his career success has been with the Pirates.
Initially drafted by Pittsburgh as the 11th overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft, McCutchen spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Pirates and earned six All-Star Game appearances.
After a hiatus away from Pittsburgh, McCutchen rejoined the Pirates in 2023 on a one-year contract. He showed productivity across 112 games, achieving a slash line of .256/.378/.397, hitting 12 home runs, 43 RBIs, securing 75 walks, and maintaining a .776 OPS.
At 37 years old, McCutchen returns to the Pirates with 299 career home runs, ranking 12th among active players. Should 2024 mark his final season, reaching his 300th career home run while in a Pirates uniform would be a significant and memorable moment for McCutchen.
