Ifeatu Melifonwu experienced two crucial changes in his third season that were not present in his first two years in the NFL.

Firstly, there was an improvement in his health. Secondly, he received more playing opportunities. In his rookie year in 2021, Melifonwu, a third-round pick by the Lions, played only seven games due to a quad injury that led to him being placed on IR. In his second year, an ankle injury limited his participation to 10 games in 2022. However, in the most recent season, Melifonwu managed to avoid injuries and played in all 17 games.

During the last six games of the season, he secured a starting position. This is when Lions general manager Brad Holmes recognized the potential in the 6-foot-3, 210-pound cornerback from Syracuse. Melifonwu transitioned from cornerback to safety midway through the previous season, making this year his first full season in the new position.

Reflecting on the expectations for the next season, Melifonwu expressed confidence, stating, “Being healthy, I feel like my confidence was growing every week.” He emphasized that his confidence would continue to develop during the offseason as he reviews his performance. Despite acknowledging that there were likely missed opportunities during the season, he expressed gratitude for finishing the year healthy and anticipates further growth in his confidence.

Melifonwu showcased his potential towards the end of the season, especially after joining the starting lineup in Week 14. Notable performances include Week 15 against Denver, where he contributed two passes defended, a sack, and a forced fumble. In Week 16 against Minnesota, he defended two passes, recorded 2.0 sacks, and secured the interception that clinched the NFC North title. The following week in Dallas, he added his second interception of the season.
