The 2024 Detroit Lions are aiming for nothing less than reaching the Super Bowl.
After the Detroit Lions’ NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, Amon-Ra St. Brown left the field with a sense of defeat he hoped to avoid. Despite the Lions achieving their first division title in over three decades and winning two playoff games in a single postseason for the first time since 1957, St. Brown was not content.
Looking ahead, the Lions have set their sights on securing a Super Bowl victory for Detroit, terming it as “unfinished business” during the Pro Bowl Games. St. Brown emphasized that the disappointment of the NFC Championship loss serves as motivation for the upcoming season. Although the team had a successful year overall, he believes it all amounts to nothing if they don’t clinch the championship.
The offseason priorities for the Lions include bolstering their defense, particularly in the secondary and finding a standout player to complement Pro Bowl edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. The team’s defense allowed 23.2 points per game, ranking 23rd in the league, and struggled with a 31st-place ranking in yards allowed per pass attempt at 7.8.
Lions’ general manager Brad Holmes acknowledged the need for improvement on defense but expressed confidence in the existing roster’s potential for growth. Despite being a young defensive team, Holmes believes in the collaborative effort to build a balanced and high-quality team on both sides of the ball.
In addition to defensive enhancements, the Lions may seek depth in the offensive line, addressing potential departures through free agency. Quarterback Jared Goff, who experienced a career resurgence with 4,575 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, is considered part of the team’s future. Talks about a contract extension have been ongoing, with the front office expressing unwavering faith in Goff’s leadership and abilities.
Retaining both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, despite head coaching interest, signals a positive culture within the organization. Hutchinson sees the continuity with coordinators as beneficial for the team’s understanding of systems, emphasizing the value of playoff experience gained during the previous season.
As the Lions gear up for the next season, they are fueled by the desire to turn their recent success into a Super Bowl triumph and build on the valuable experience gained during their playoff run.
