On Wednesday, the Cincinnati Bengals parted ways with veteran quarterback A.J. McCarron.
McCarron rejoined the Bengals during the previous season when he was added to the practice squad on September 23, 2023. His return was prompted by starting quarterback Joe Burrow’s calf injury during training camp, and the Bengals sought an additional quarterback, with Jake Browning serving as the backup.
In November, when Burrow sustained a season-ending wrist injury, McCarron was promoted to the active roster, assuming the role of Cincinnati’s backup quarterback behind Browning. He made appearances in two games during the 2023 season.
Having originally been drafted by the Bengals in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft, McCarron spent the first three seasons of his career in Cincinnati. Over his four seasons with the Bengals, he played in 13 games, making three starts.
The NFL’s new league year is set to commence on March 13 at 4 p.m., coinciding with several key players from the 2023 season becoming free agents.
