The New England Patriots have expanded their offensive coaching staff with the addition of Mike McCarthy, a coach with a familiar name shared with the current head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. McCarthy, who brings considerable experience to his new role with the Patriots, will serve as an offensive assistant, as reported by John Brice of Football Scoop. His previous coaching tenure includes spending five years coaching the offensive line at Brown University.
McCarthy’s off-field career commenced in 2007, following his playing days as an outside linebacker and long snapper at Widener University. He has held various coaching positions at both the NFL and college football levels. In the NFL, he had stints with the New York Jets in 2008 as a scouting/video intern, the Cleveland Browns in 2015 as offensive quality control, and the Detroit Lions from 2016 to 2017 as quality control/assistant offensive line coach. In the college ranks, McCarthy worked at institutions such as Rutgers, the College of New Jersey, Western Michigan, Tulane, North Carolina Central, and lastly, Brown University.
McCarthy, now returning to the professional ranks, becomes the latest addition to Jerod Mayo’s new coaching staff in New England. As one of the two offensive assistants hired to support offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, McCarthy joins the ranks alongside former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo in a similar position.
