A few weeks ago, Joe Schoen, the general manager of the New York Giants, stated their intention to actively pursue a quarterback through either the draft or free agency. With Tyrod Taylor’s contract ending, the Giants are seeking a backup for Daniel Jones. If they can’t secure a top quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, they might consider an experienced player at a reasonable cost.
The free-agent quarterback market offers depth, with names like Jacoby Brissett and Mitchell Trubisky catching the Giants’ attention. However, two options stand out for a cost-effective solution. Joshua Dobbs showcased his skills in Week 2 against the Giants, throwing for 228 yards and a touchdown, while also posing a threat with 41 rushing yards and another touchdown.
Despite inconsistency, Dobbs, now with the Minnesota Vikings, could be a budget-friendly addition, especially under the guidance of head coach Brian Daboll in an offense that values a mobile quarterback.
Another potential candidate is 28-year-old Gardner Minshew, a former sixth-round pick who spent the last season with the Indianapolis Colts. Stepping in after a season-ending injury to Anthony Richardson, Minshew concluded the season with 3,305 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. With a 62.2% completion rate and a 3.8% turnover-worthy play rate, Minshew brings experience with five seasons in the league, including three with starting reps. While Dobbs may entice with his mobility, Minshew’s seasoned presence and understanding of game dynamics make him an appealing choice for the Giants.
