Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, is fully aware of the high stakes tied to his position in these remaining crucial games, as speculations about his job security loom large.

The recent 34-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, allowing Baker Mayfield to achieve a perfect 158.3 passer rating, stirred questions regarding Barry’s tenure. Despite queries about removing Barry before the season’s end, coach Matt LaFleur confirmed on Monday that Barry would remain in his current role. However, this decision hasn’t subdued the criticism prevalent in Wisconsin’s sports discussions as the Packers gear up to face Carolina.

Barry, in his third season as coordinator, acknowledged the criticism and pressure while taking responsibility for the defense’s shortcomings. He admitted that this week has been particularly challenging, recognizing the need for improvement and attributing the team’s recent struggles to his role.

The Packers’ veteran defense, comprising eight first-round picks, including Kenny Clark, Jaire Alexander, and Rashan Gary, has faced challenges due to injuries. Alexander’s absence in the last six games, alongside injuries to Stokes, Savage, and Walker, has disrupted defensive cohesion.

In the recent loss, the defense’s zone coverage strategy aimed to contain Mike Evans but inadvertently allowed Mayfield to exploit other avenues, leading to substantial gains by Chris Godwin and David Moore.

LaFleur expressed a more active role in defense, emphasizing communication issues as a significant concern. He acknowledged the necessity for collective alignment among players and coaches to prevent defensive breakdowns, highlighting the importance of cohesion for effective performance.

Despite recent setbacks, the Packers maintain playoff aspirations, banking on an improved defensive display. Barry remains focused on the immediate task at hand, prioritizing control over his own performance and disregarding external opinions.
