Two assistant coaches from prominent Georgia-based college football programs are strongly considered for the head coaching position at Georgia State. Sources close to both Georgia State and Georgia programs have identified Dell McGee, the running backs coach at the University of Georgia, and Buster Faulkner, the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, as serious contenders for the role.
A decision on the head coaching position is anticipated within the next few days. Currently, Georgia State represents the sole remaining head coaching vacancy at the FBS level, following Shawn Elliott’s departure last week, just two days into spring practice, to assume the position of tight ends coach at South Carolina.
Trooper Taylor, the associate head coach and running backs coach at Texas A&M, is also being seriously considered for the position.
Both McGee and Faulkner possess extensive histories in the state, adding to their appeal for Georgia State, an Atlanta-based program that commenced as an FBS program in 2010.
At 50 years old, McGee is one of two assistants who have been with Kirby Smart since he took over as Georgia’s head coach in 2016. Before joining Georgia, McGee served as the running backs coach at Georgia Southern, where he also took on the role of interim head coach for a bowl game following Willie Fritz’s departure for the Tulane job.
