In various recent radio and podcast appearances, Antonio Pierce, the coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, faced questions about his concerns regarding his counterparts in the AFC West. Specifically, he was asked if he felt challenged going up against notable coaches like Andy Reid, Sean Payton, and Jim Harbaugh.
Pierce confidently responded on SiriusXM NFL Radio, stating, “No, I think it’s the other way around. They got their work cut out for me… And the Raiders.” His bold demeanor was further emphasized when, in another podcast, he received a white Al Davis tracksuit jacket as a gift, reminiscent of the iconic figure from the Raiders’ history. However, much like Davis in 2002—the year of the Raiders’ last playoff win—Pierce acknowledges the need to secure a formidable quarterback who can make opponents apprehensive about facing his team.
To address this, Raiders owner Mark Davis has enlisted general manager Tom Telesco’s assistance, with the initial focus being on the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine. The key task is evaluating whether the top three quarterbacks merit a substantial investment, potentially involving at least two first-round picks, a second-round pick, and additional considerations. Additionally, consideration is given to the next three quarterback prospects. The likelihood of the first among them, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, being unavailable by the time the Raiders select at No. 13 is already apparent.
Another viable option is pursuing a veteran quarterback, aligning with the team’s belief that it is poised for a playoff run following its 5-4 finish under Pierce’s leadership. Noteworthy players like Maxx Crosby and Davante Adams, who are among the highest-paid at their positions, contribute to the team’s confidence. Furthermore, there is potential interest in bringing back free agent running back Josh Jacobs, contingent on favorable contract terms.
