The Detroit Lions have already made a move in the CFL market this offseason by signing Mathieu Betts, the reigning Most Outstanding Defensive Player, to a free agent contract. Now, general manager Brad Holmes is preparing to welcome Qwan’tez Stiggers, the league’s reigning Most Outstanding Rookie, for a pre-Draft Top-30 visit, as reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
Stiggers, a cornerback, is taking an unconventional path to professional football, having not played a single snap of college football. Originally set to enroll at Lane College in Tennessee, he withdrew after the passing of his father in 2020. Without a college football background, Stiggers initially worked as a Door Dash driver before entering the Fan Controlled Football League. Subsequently, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL, contemplating a potential career in the XFL as well.
During the 2023 season with the Argonauts, Stiggers emerged as a standout player, amassing 53 defensive tackles and five interceptions. His impressive performance earned him an invitation to the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he excelled, creating considerable buzz about his professional potential. Despite not receiving an invitation to the NFL Combine, which commences on Tuesday, Stiggers is drawing attention.
The Lions, facing challenges with their cornerback options in 2023, are reportedly seeking cornerback assistance. Additionally, Detroit has made coaching changes by bringing in Deshea Townsend, a former player with two Super Bowl victories, as the new cornerbacks coach and defensive passing game coordinator.
