Michigan’s all-time leading rusher, Mike Hart, transitioned to the role of running backs coach under Jim Harbaugh at the Wolverines’ football program after serving four years in the same position with the Indiana Hoosiers. As one of the final additions to new head coach Sherrone Moore’s coaching staff following Harbaugh’s departure, Hart, known for his success as a position coach, has been a topic of speculation among fans regarding his status with the team.
Recently, Isaiah Hole, a veteran Michigan football reporter, provided an update on Hart’s situation during an episode of his “Locked on Wolverines” podcast on Tuesday. Hole revealed that Hart is currently on a “leave of absence” from the Michigan football coaching staff, and the reasons for this leave remain undisclosed.
Hole shared this information within a broader discussion about whether Moore’s coaching staff has been finalized. He mentioned, “The only thing we’re really truly waiting on is what happens when Mike Hart comes back from his leave of absence. And I don’t know if there’s anything to worry about there or not. He is on a leave of absence, I have been told.”
Hart faced a health scare on October 8, 2022, collapsing on the sidelines during a game against the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Indiana. Following this incident, he spent time in a local hospital before returning to the sidelines the following week against Penn State. Despite this setback, Hart went on to play a pivotal role in developing one of the nation’s top rushing attacks, coaching Michigan team captain Blake Corum to second-team All-American honors in 2023.
