“Miami Dolphins Face Key Decision with Versatile Lineman Robert Jones as Free Agency Looms”

The Miami Dolphins anticipate 29 players entering free agency in March, a notable figure among them being Robert Jones, the team’s singular restricted free agent and a versatile offensive lineman.

At 25 years old, Jones joined the Dolphins in 2021 as an undrafted free agent, following a collegiate stint at Middle Tennessee. Initially making the roster as a rookie, he played in eight games and started at right tackle. However, in the subsequent two years, he exclusively assumed the guard position, accumulating valuable experience with 24 games and 12 starts, often stepping in due to injuries to players like Robert Hunt and Isaiah Wynn.

In 2023, Jones, grappling with his own injuries, earned recognition as Pro Football Focus’ 44th-ranked guard, achieving an overall grade of 57.6. Moreover, he secured the 29th spot in run-blocking guards with a commendable 62.3 grade.

The Dolphins are confronted with uncertainties in their offensive line for the upcoming offseason, with impending free agency for key figures like Hunt, Williams, and center Connor Williams, potentially resulting in three new starters in 2024.

As a restricted free agent, Jones could be tendered with different options: a first-round tender costing $6.82 million, a second-round tender at $4.89 million, or a right-of-first-refusal tender around $2.99 million. The latter seems most suitable for Jones, given the likelihood of other teams refraining from presenting offer sheets. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Dolphins opt for a one-year deal before the offseason begins as a precaution.

Jones’ versatility across four positions on the offensive line makes him a valuable asset. Considering his proficiency in each role, Miami should make efforts to secure his return for at least another year.
