“Michigan State’s Five-Star Freshman, Xavier Booker, Set to Make First Career Start Against Ohio State”

After weeks, or perhaps months, of anticipation from Michigan State fans, their wish is about to come true. Head coach Tom Izzo has officially confirmed on his pre-game radio show that the highly-touted five-star freshman, Xavier Booker, will make his inaugural start for the Spartans in today’s matchup against Ohio State, stepping in for senior center Mady Sissoko.

Izzo has been alluding to an increased role for Booker for an extended period, and it appears that the moment has finally arrived. Up until now, the 6-foot-11 stretch big has been averaging a mere eight minutes per game this season and has been absent from several Big Ten games. Booker’s stat line includes an average of 3.4 points per game, shooting 45% from the field and 36.7% from the 3-point line. Despite limited playing time, the freshman has contributed 1.7 rebounds and 0.4 blocks per game.

Throughout the season, Michigan State has grappled with inconsistent production from its center position. Sissoko has faced challenges in recent weeks, and while sophomore Carson Cooper excels defensively and on the boards, his offensive capabilities are constrained. Another sophomore, Jaxon Kohler, has shown promise since returning from injury but is still finding a consistent role with the Spartans.

This sets the stage for Booker, who has notably added around 20-25 pounds to his 6-foot-11 frame since the start of the season. Both Izzo and Booker’s teammates have highlighted the freshman’s increased physicality and toughness in recent weeks, earning him a higher level of trust from Coach Izzo. The focus will be on how Booker performs defensively and on the glass against the Buckeyes, but there’s little doubt that his presence should enhance Michigan State’s offensive potency.
