Jeff Hafley is leaving his position as the head coach of Boston College to become the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator. The Packers announced the decision following the firing of Joe Barry, the previous defensive coordinator. Hafley, who had a 22-26 record in four seasons at Boston College, expressed gratitude for his time there and praised the university’s support and facilities. The 44-year-old coach, previously an NFL secondary coach, is the latest college head coach to transition to an assistant role in the NFL.
Hafley takes charge of a Green Bay defense that had a mixed performance during the season, ranking 10th in points allowed per game, 17th in yards allowed per game, and 23rd in yards allowed per play.
The defense showed improvement towards the end of the season, allowing only one touchdown in the last two regular-season games. The Packers’ playoff run ended with a 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
During his tenure at Boston College, Hafley faced challenges, including a 3-9 season in 2022 plagued by injuries and quarterback issues. Despite the difficulties, Hafley’s leadership secured five consecutive wins and another bowl berth after an initial 1-3 start to the season. Boston College’s athletic director, Blake James, expressed gratitude for Hafley’s service, and the university will begin a national search for a new head coach.
