The Las Vegas Raiders initiated cost-cutting measures at the onset of the new league year, parting ways with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in a bid to create more flexibility under the salary cap.
In addition to Garoppolo and Renfrow, the Raiders also released backup quarterback Brian Hoyer and defensive tackle Jerry Tillery on Wednesday, shortly after the commencement of the 2024 league year.
These moves provide considerable salary cap relief for the Raiders, allowing general manager Tom Telesco and coach Antonio Pierce greater maneuverability as they aim to bolster the team’s competitiveness during the offseason.
The decision to release these players was widely anticipated, particularly after Garoppolo was benched midway through the previous season following Pierce’s takeover from ousted coach Josh McDaniels. Furthermore, the departures of Hoyer and Tillery signal that they no longer fit into the team’s long-term plans.
Last offseason, the Raiders had signed Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the intention of him taking over as quarterback after the release of Derek Carr. However, the move failed to yield the desired results, encountering setbacks almost immediately.
