Leadership Change Announced by University of Michigan’s Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics…
“After conducting a thorough evaluation of the program, I have made the decision that Juwan will not be continuing as our men’s basketball coach,” Manuel stated. “Juwan has left an indelible mark on our basketball program and holds a significant place among the finest Wolverines in our history. His return to lead this program was deeply meaningful, both to him and to all of us. However, despite his alma mater’s affection and the positive impact he had on our student-athletes, it became apparent to me that the program was not meeting our expectations and was not progressing as desired. I am grateful for Juwan’s unwavering dedication, enthusiasm, and loyalty to U-M, and his enduring legacy will always hold great significance for Michigan.”
Over the course of his five-year tenure in Ann Arbor, Howard amassed an 82-67 record, securing two NCAA Tournament berths (in 2021 and 2022) along with an appearance in the postseason NIT in 2023. Howard led the Wolverines to clinch the 2021 Big Ten regular-season championship with a 14-3 record and achieved four consecutive seasons with double-digit wins in the Big Ten, accumulating a 48-47 conference record. In recognition of his achievements, Howard was honored as the Associated Press National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2021. Additionally, he guided six Wolverines to selection in the NBA Draft, including three who were chosen in the top 15.
Howard, a former NBA player, returned to his alma mater to embark on his first head coaching role following a six-year stint with the NBA’s Miami Heat. Transitioning from player development to assistant coaching in 2014-15, he served under Erik Spoelstra for five seasons. Prior to his coaching career, Howard enjoyed a distinguished 19-year NBA tenure, culminating in consecutive NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 with the Miami Heat.
