Jonathan Bullard eagerly anticipates his second season with the Vikings under the guidance of Brian Flores.

In EAGAN, Minn., the Vikings’ locker room is abuzz with changes in the first week of the new league year, including new turf inside the Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center’s IPF (indoor practice facility). Amidst this, Jonathan Bullard returns for his third season in purple, notably his second under Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores. Bullard finalized his contract signing at TCO Performance Center on Monday.

While some speculated that Flores might receive head coach interviews after instrumental improvements in Minnesota’s defense from 2022 to 2023, such opportunities didn’t materialize. Despite this, players like Bullard are thrilled to have Flores back and are eager to play under his guidance.

“It’s great to have him back, but he deserves another shot at a head coaching position,” Bullard expressed. “I want to go out there and perform well for him, showcase what he’s capable of. He’s vouched for me to be here again, and I’ll do the same for him to get another opportunity. My goal is to ensure our defense shines and help build his resume.”

Bullard’s NFL journey began in 2016 as a third-round pick for the Bears, followed by stints with Arizona, Seattle, and Atlanta. The chance to establish deeper roots with the Vikings was welcomed, leading to notable growth.

Last season, Bullard, who turned 30 in October, saw a career-high 644 snaps on defense, recording personal bests of 44 tackles and 2.0 sacks. Known for his physicality and willingness to handle the gritty aspects of the game, Bullard has made significant contributions in his NFL career, including 36 starts in 99 regular-season games.

“I take pride in my physicality and stopping the run,” Bullard stated. “But there’s always room for improvement. With Flo’s guidance and the additions to our team, I’m confident in our ability to succeed.”

Under Flores, the Vikings’ defense made substantial strides, improving from 28th in points against, 31st in yards allowed, and 22nd in average yards per rush in 2022 to 13th, 16th, and 4th, respectively, in 2023.

“With Flo back and key pieces returning, I’m excited to see our progress,” Bullard remarked. “He’s a phenomenal coach, and I’ll give my all for him and my teammates. If we can build on last year’s success, he’ll undoubtedly garner more attention.”

Bullard’s sentiments reflect a team geared towards growth and a coach poised for further recognition.
