In Athens, Georgia basketball delivers a dose of March Madness as they advance with a thrilling finish.

In Athens, Georgia basketball enthusiasts witnessed their team’s first taste of March Madness in seven years on Tuesday night, celebrating a hard-fought victory after enduring some tense moments.

The Bulldogs managed to fend off a determined Xavier squad, clinching a thrilling 78-76 win in a nail-biting finish. Georgia showcased resilience against the formidable Big East opponent, highlighted by Russel Tchewa’s crucial block on Quincy Olivari’s shot attempt.

Next up, Georgia will face the winner of Wednesday’s NIT game between Wake Forest and Appalachian State on either Saturday or Sunday. Depending on the outcome, the Bulldogs will either travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., or host the game at home.

Despite nearly squandering a 23-point lead in the final 13:25, Georgia fans remained on the edge of their seats, witnessing their team’s perseverance in the face of adversity. Coach Mike White emphasized the importance of learning from such experiences, recognizing the significance of securing an NIT win, especially against a formidable opponent like Xavier.

Indeed, the victory over Xavier marked a significant milestone for Georgia’s basketball program, instilling confidence in the returning players and serving as a positive reflection for potential recruits. Although the ultimate goal is to reach the NCAA tournament, the Bulldogs are honored to be part of the NIT and are determined to progress further.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Georgia displayed resilience and made crucial plays down the stretch. RJ Melendez’s steal and Silas Demary Jr.’s clutch layup under intense pressure were instrumental in securing the win.

The defensive efforts were equally commendable, with Russel Tchewa’s game-saving block on Olivari’s shot attempt ensuring victory for the Bulldogs. Despite some skepticism from certain quarters, the win marked a significant step forward for Georgia’s basketball program, signaling progress and growth, especially with three freshmen starters contributing significantly to the team’s success.
