“I don’t think so. Um, I’m not sure what the alternative strategy would have been. Perhaps starting on mediums was a mistake, but we still had to contend with two really difficult stints on hard tyres,” he conceded.
Hamilton explained that he likely sustained damage at the beginning of the race during a clash with Charles Leclerc, resulting in significant understeer throughout the initial stint, prompting him to yield positions to competitors like George Russell.
In response to inquiries about whether Mercedes should have mirrored Ferrari and Red Bull’s tyre choices, Hamilton reflected on the day’s hurdles, acknowledging the shortcomings of the hard tyres compared to the mediums and expressing dissatisfaction with the car’s overall performance.
“The hard tyres were quite challenging. In hindsight, it seems like opting for two sets of medium tyres would have been better. However, overall, the car just didn’t perform well today,” he commented.
