Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata discusses his contract extension with the team.
The Eagles have solidified Jalen Hurts’ blindside protection for the foreseeable future.
Philadelphia recently reached an agreement with left tackle Jordan Mailata on a three-year, $66 million extension, ensuring his presence on the team until 2028.
Expressing his gratitude during a Friday news conference, Mailata stated, “It is an honor to be able to play at one club. I’ve always wanted to be a player that has played for one team and there are so few that get to do that. To be a part of history and be a part of the club and the culture that we are trying to continue to build is an honor. I am very grateful to the organization.”
Mailata’s journey from Australia to Philadelphia is remarkable. Initially involved in rugby, he transitioned to professional football and eventually made his NFL debut. Identified through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, Mailata impressed the Eagles, leading to his selection in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Despite encountering back injuries in his initial seasons, Mailata showcased his potential with his first start in 2020 and has since become a regular starter for Philadelphia, featuring in 47 games over the past three seasons.
Now at 27, Mailata credits his run game coordinator and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland for his development, stating, “It all starts with the coach I have in that room right now and the culture that he set. You either sink to the bottom or rise to the top because of Coach Stout.”
With his performance steadily improving each season, Mailata’s new contract extension ($22 million per season) places him fourth among left tackles, trailing Laremy Tunsil, Andrew Thomas, and Trent Williams.
Following Jason Kelce’s retirement this offseason, Mailata is prepared to assume a larger leadership role heading into the 2024 season, stating, “Any opportunity I can get to lead from within, I will always embrace. I am looking forward to coming back here and building something we can look forward to.”
