Oklahoma reschedules its 2024 home opener to Friday night.
Oklahoma’s 2024 football season is set to commence on Friday.
Following discussions with ESPN, the Sooners have rescheduled the season-opening matchup against Temple to August 30, as officially announced by OU on Tuesday.
The game will be broadcasted on ESPN and will kick off at 6 p.m., marking the first-ever Friday night game at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
Joe Castiglione, Vice President and Director of Athletics at the University of Oklahoma, stated in a press release, “We were approached about moving the season opener up by a day so ESPN could showcase our inaugural SEC game in primetime. It’s an exciting opportunity for us, being our first Friday night game at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, providing significant national visibility to our team. Moreover, the evening kickoff should alleviate some of the heat issues typical of early season day games.”
He continued, “We anticipate that this change may affect travel plans for some fans. We urge local hotels to be flexible and accommodate those who need to adjust from a Saturday game to a Friday night contest.”
In 2023, OU concluded its regular season with a Friday game against TCU, marking the program’s final Big 12 Conference matchup.
Oklahoma is set to officially join the SEC on July 1, 2024.
Historically, the Sooners hold a record of 10-6 in Friday games since World War II, with ten of those matchups against Nebraska.
