Just in: Devon Jackson significant with Oregon Ducks has been….

The upward trajectory of linebacker Devon Jackson’s prospects accelerates as he approaches his third year.

Redshirt sophomore linebacker Devon Jackson is poised to assume a more significant role with the Oregon Ducks in 2024. After taking a redshirt year as a freshman in 2022, Jackson participated in 12 out of 14 games last season, consistently making contributions with at least one tackle in nine of those games.

The departure of Jamal Hill, who has moved on to pursue opportunities in the NFL after exhausting his college eligibility, creates openings at inside linebacker for the upcoming season. Jackson is positioned as one of the top candidates to receive increased playing time behind projected starters Jestin Jacobs and Jeffrey Bassa.

Oregon recently held its initial spring practice scrimmage, and Linebackers Coach Brian Michalowksi expressed significant optimism about Jackson’s progress. Michalowksi highlighted Jackson’s remarkable development both on and off the field, emphasizing his enhanced mindset and expanded understanding of the game.

Jackson’s physical transformation, including maintaining his speed while adding bulk to his 6-foot-2 frame, has been crucial as he evolves into a well-rounded inside linebacker. Michalowksi commended Jackson’s exceptional communication skills and unparalleled athleticism, singling him out as the fastest player on the team.

As Jackson prepares to take on a more prominent role in directing the defense, his growing comfort and knowledge within the Ducks’ defensive scheme are evident. Michalowksi emphasized the importance of game intelligence in maximizing Jackson’s exceptional speed and physical abilities on the field.

While Jackson’s speed remains a valuable asset, it appears that he is being tasked with additional responsibilities, particularly in pass rushing situations. Jackson himself acknowledges the importance of refining his blitz timing under the guidance of his coaches.

Surrounded by talented teammates and experienced coaches, Jackson embraces a continuous learning approach, absorbing knowledge from the coaching staff and fellow players. Reflecting on his growth over the past two years, Jackson acknowledges the invaluable contributions of coaches Lanning, Lupoi, and Michalowksi in shaping his understanding of the game and his role as an inside linebacker.

Jackson faces competition from returning players and newcomers alike as he vies for a significant role within the Ducks’ defense.
